Description

Reporting to the Director, Research Translation Group, the Assistant Director, Licensing, role is for a full-time licensing professional who manages a portfolio of intellectual property in the biomedical and life sciences and leads the Life Science licensing team. The position requires interaction with faculty members, including clinical investigators and academic research scientists, at the UC Irvine Medical Center and on the University’s main campus. The Assistant Director, Licensing, will independently manage inventions at various stages of development, from conception to commercialization. Responsibilities include building productive relationships with industry leaders through communication and outreach, assessing technologies for patentability and commercialization, managing the patent process, developing commercialization strategies, negotiating and monitoring license agreements, and drafting and executing IP-related agreements. This position requires a strong background in the medical sciences and frequent interactions with professionals in the academic, legal, financial, and business communities. • Strong familiarity with patent law and the role of intellectual property in business practices.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other offices both internal and external to the University. Partners with clinical investigators to connect research to the market.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently.
• Strong familiarity with university guidelines and policies related to intellectual property and licensing.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Self-starter able to manage a complex portfolio of diverse technologies; multi-tasking skills are essential.
• Ability to stay abreast of national and international developments in the management of IP license and research agreements.
• Ability to direct, motivate, and lead professional staff.
• Skills in market research, projection and valuation methods. Familiar with accessing information from databases and accessing market and company information.
• Ability to clearly communicate matters of law, policy, and science to multiple constituencies.
• Knowledge of the medical sciences as evidenced by an advanced post-graduate degree in biomedical sciences, including research and technical experience.
• Advanced ability to independently exercise sound judgment and decision-making, creativity, problem-solving, and critical analysis.
• Ability to quickly assess new technology and incorporate it into operations to speed up effective decision-making.
• Ability to pivot and remain flexible when presented with new information.
• Bachelor's degree in related area.
• Advanced degree required.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical biotechnology industries, technology transfer, or commensurate combination of education and experience.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in technology licensing, including negotiating terms and conditions in intellectual property contracts and executing licensing agreements.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience supervisory experience in leading a team.
• Hybrid work environment - in office 3 days per week.
