Entry level engineer who will report to a senior team leader overseeing the activities in EPRI's high temperature materials test laboratory. The primary responsibility for this role will include building out high temperature servo hydraulic testing capabilities at EPRI's Generation Mechanical Testing Lab in Charlotte, NC and execution of lab tasks critical for the success of larger research projects managed by the Materials program. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of high temperature mechanical testing, data analysis and experimental procedures. Additional job responsibilities will involve leading 2-3 collaborative projects with the steam turbine, generator and gas turbine programs. This will involve developing testing procedures, execution of lab tests, presenting research findings to utility members and technical writing of research findings to meet key deliverables. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar fields.
Additional Job Information:
Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or similar field. Key Knowledge/Skills would be:
1. Knowledge of servohydraulic mechanical testing systems
2. Experience with fatigue testing methods
3. Experience with creep testing at elevated temperatures
4. Ability to develop drawings and/or design new test equipment or set-ups in CAD software
5. Agility to effectively communicate research results to power utility members
6. Excellent verbal and technical writing skills
7. Strong work ethic and creative mindset to build unique testing capabilities
The candidate should be prepared to grow into additional role(s) which may include, but not be limited to: programming of specialized lab-based software, use of materials characterization equipment (e.g. optical and scanning electron microscopes), management of larger projects that interface with other program managers across the institute, and lead individual(s) assisting in the day-to-day laboratory activities.
Performs routine analysis in technical or scientific areas at direction of manager. Works directly with EPRI staff; may have administrative interactions with members.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements:
- Conducts technical searches and analyzes technical information in support of the project team.
- May conduct research at the direction of the project manager.
- Work is performed under general supervision.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required.
